Botox Q & A

Holladay Dermatology & Aesthetics

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s injected into facial muscles to treat wrinkles. Extensive research has proven Botox to be safe and effective for cosmetic use.

Botox works by blocking nerve signals in the targeted area. As a result, muscles relax and the wrinkles they cause are significantly diminished or eliminated.

What facial wrinkles are treated with Botox?

The wrinkles on your face may all look the same, but there are two distinct types. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by years of repetitive muscle movements, like frowning and squinting. The second type, static wrinkles, develop due to age-related changes in your skin such as loss of collagen and sun damage.

Botox treats moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles including:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Bunny lines on nose
  • Neck bands

Does Botox affect your facial expressions?

Absolutely not – when administered by an experienced professional such as Dr. Topham. Known for the natural results he achieves with Botox, Dr. Topham targets small areas in a few specific muscles underneath the wrinkles you want to eliminate. The majority of your facial muscles aren’t affected, so you continue to look natural.

What happens during and after the procedure?

Botox treatments take about 15 minutes, but the length of time depends on the area being treated. Dr. Topham explains the procedure, tells you what to expect, and answers all of your questions before treatment begins.

The injection site may be slightly red, swollen or bruised for a short time, but you can use makeup before leaving the office. You don’t need to take time off to recover, although you’ll need to wait a few hours before you engage in exercise or strenuous activities.

How long will results last?

You’ll see results in 3-7 days because it takes a little time for Botox to take full effect. Expect your results to last about 3-6 months before Botox wears off.* You can get another injection to maintain the same impact. In many people, the results last longer with repeated injections.

Dr. Topham has extensive experience injecting Botox to produce optimal results so you can count on the quality of care you’ll receive. If you’re considering Botox or you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call his office.

*Individual results may vary.
