What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Do Before Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is a great way to clear away unwanted ink, and the right prep (and aftercare) makes all the difference. Here’s what you should — and shouldn’t — do before and after treatment.

Thinking about saying goodbye to an old tattoo? You’re not alone. About one-quarter of people with tattoos regret them for one reason or another and seek tattoo removal services.

At Holladay Dermatology & Aesthetics, we help tattooed people throughout Holladay and the Salt Lake Valley remove unwanted ink using the advanced enlightenTM laser system. Dr. Robert Topham and our expert team are here to make the process as smooth and effective as possible.

One of the most important things you can do to ensure the best results is to prepare properly and follow the right aftercare steps.

Here’s a guide to what you should and shouldn’t do before and after your laser tattoo removal sessions.

Before laser tattoo removal

Great tattoo removal results start before your treatment does.

What to do

Before your first session, keep your skin healthy and ready for treatment:

  • Stay hydrated and keep your skin moisturized so the laser can penetrate more evenly
  • Wear sunscreen daily on the area being treated (tanning can interfere with your results)
  • Shave the area if needed so the laser has a clear path to the ink
  • Follow any personalized instructions we give you, such as adjusting certain medications if necessary

Taking these steps helps ensure your skin responds well to treatment and reduces the risk of irritation.

What not to do

Certain habits and products can slow your healing or affect the outcome:

  • Don’t tan or use self-tanner; pigmentation changes can increase the risk of side effects
  • Don’t use harsh skincare products (like retinoids or chemical exfoliants)
  • Don’t show up with a fresh sunburn or irritated skin; we’ll need to reschedule if you do
  • Don’t drink alcohol the night before; it can thin your blood and make your skin more sensitive

These simple “don’ts” set you up for the best possible session.

After laser tattoo removal

The right aftercare can mean the difference between a so-so result and the fresh, clear skin you want.

What to do

Healing is just as important as the treatment itself. After each session:

  • Keep the area clean and covered with a sterile bandage for the first 24 hours
  • Apply a thin layer of healing ointment as directed
  • Use cool compresses if you notice mild swelling or redness
  • Protect the area from the sun with clothing or SPF once the skin has healed

Your body’s immune system does most of the work of breaking down ink particles — good aftercare supports that natural process.

What not to do

Resist the temptation to treat your healing skin like a normal scratch or irritation:

  • Don’t pick, scratch, or peel scabs or blisters.; this can lead to scarring
  • Don’t expose the area to direct sun or tanning beds until it’s fully healed
  • Don’t soak in pools, hot tubs, or baths for several days; showers are fine
  • Don’t overdo exercise that makes the treated area rub against clothing

Being careful during the healing period helps your skin recover quickly and cleanly.

Laser tattoo removal is a process, not a one-time fix. By following these simple before-and-after steps, you’ll give your skin the best chance to clear safely and effectively.
